Hamburg Leads the Way in Reducing Emissions with Ban on Petrol-Powered Taxis

Hamburg is the first German state to announce that it will no longer allow petrol-powered taxis from 2025. This measure, which is expected to save 25,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, is part of the city’s commitment to reduce emissions in the transport sector. Currently, 12% of Hamburg’s taxis are already electric or hydrogen-powered, and the city has been supporting the switch through its ‚Zukunftstaxi‘ project since 2021. The shift has been welcomed by taxi companies and passengers alike, with 80% of Hamburg’s zero-emission taxis being provided by FREE NOW.

The Impact of Emissions

Emissions from vehicles, factories, and other sources are a major contributor to air pollution. The emissions released into the atmosphere contain harmful substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide which can have a damaging effect on human health, the environment and the climate. Studies have shown that reducing emissions is essential to improving air quality and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Governments around the world are taking steps to reduce emissions by implementing regulations, taxes and incentives for businesses to adopt cleaner technologies.
