Germany and Kenya Partner to Reach 100% Renewable Energy and Produce Hydrogen

The German government is providing Kenya with 112 million euros ($118 million) to help the East African nation reach 100% renewable energy and produce hydrogen. The funds will be used for new energy infrastructure, training, anti-corruption programs, and making Kenyan agriculture more resilient to drought. This is part of an agreement between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Kenya’s President William Ruto that was reached at the U.N. climate conference last month. Hydrogen produced with renewable energy can be exported or used to make fertilizer for Kenya’s domestic agriculture industry.

Renewable Energy, Hydrogen, and Agriculture

Renewable energy is becoming increasingly important in the modern world. In 2019, renewable energy accounted for 26% of global electricity generation, with hydropower being the largest contributor at 16%. Hydrogen is also gaining traction as a clean energy source. In 2018, hydrogen production from renewable sources increased by 25%, with agriculture playing an important role in this growth. In fact, agricultural residues such as straw and corn stover are now being used to produce hydrogen fuel cells. This development has enabled farmers to reduce their carbon footprint while also creating new revenue streams.
