Southern US Consortium Selected to Receive Federal Funding for Hydrogen Energy Transition

A consortium of energy companies based in the southern United States have been selected to apply for a portion of the $8 billion federal funding allocated to develop hydrogen for an energy transition. This coalition, known as Southeast Hydrogen Hub, includes major utility companies such as Dominion Energy and the Tennessee Valley Authority, and is working on plans to create a six-state hydrogen hub.

The Basics of Hydrogen

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, making up roughly 75% of all matter. It is a colorless, odorless gas that can be found in stars and the interstellar medium. Hydrogen has the atomic number 1 and an atomic weight of 1.008 g/mol. It is a non-metal that exists as diatomic molecules (H2) at room temperature and pressure. It is highly flammable and can combine with oxygen to form water or other compounds. Hydrogen has many uses, including being used as a fuel for vehicles, providing energy for industrial processes, and producing ammonia for fertilizer.
