Prime Minister Announces Launch of National Hydrogen Mission to Promote Green Hydrogen

In his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2021, the Prime Minister announced the launch of the National Hydrogen Mission. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has prepared a draft Mission document that proposes to support the production and deployment of Green Hydrogen. Green Hydrogen can be used to replace fossil fuels and fossil fuel-based feedstocks in various sectors such as fertilizer production, petroleum refining, steel production and transport applications. This was stated by Shri R.K Singh, Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.

The Potential of Green Hydrogen and Renewable Energy

Green hydrogen is a form of renewable energy that has the potential to revolutionize the world’s energy landscape. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, green hydrogen could account for up to 24% of global energy demand by 2050. This would be a major shift from the current state of affairs, where fossil fuels still dominate the energy market. Additionally, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower are expected to provide more than 70% of electricity generation by 2050. This shift towards clean energy sources will help reduce emissions and combat climate change. Furthermore, green hydrogen can be used in a variety of applications such as transportation, heating, and industrial processes. With its potential for large-scale deployment and its ability to store energy over long periods of time, green hydrogen is an exciting prospect for a greener future.
