Investigating the Potential Health and Environmental Impacts of Ohio Train Derailment

More than a week after a train derailment in Ohio released hazardous waste into the environment, the potential health and environmental impacts are still largely unknown. The waste contained vinyl chloride, which can cause dizziness or sleepiness at high levels and even death. Hydrogen chloride and phosgene, two other byproducts of burning vinyl chloride, can also cause respiratory issues. Burning any kind of material can create particle pollution, which has been linked to eye, lung and throat irritation as well as lung cancer and problems with babies at birth. Air monitoring has not detected any levels of health concern since the fire went out on February 8th, but experts advise caution when dealing with these types of events.
