Hamburg Leads the Way: Banning Combustion Engine Taxis to Combat Climate Change

Hamburg is set to become the first state in Germany to ban combustion engine taxis by 2025. This move is in order to reduce carbon emissions and help with climate change. Already 12% of Hamburg taxis are electric or hydrogen powered, and switching over to solely electric and hydrogen powered vehicles will save 25,000 tons of CO2 annually. The project ‚Zukunftstaxi‘ was launched in 2021 to encourage the switchover, and feedback from both business owners and passengers has been positive. This move hopes to send a signal across Germany and Europe that the transport sector needs to take action on climate change.

Climate Change Impacts

Climate change is causing extreme weather events, including more frequent and intense hurricanes, floods, droughts, and heat waves. These events can cause destruction to homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Climate change is also impacting wildlife habitats, leading to species extinction and disruption of food webs. Rising sea levels are threatening coastal communities with flooding and erosion. Additionally, climate change is creating air pollution that can affect our health. It is important to recognize the consequences of climate change and take action to reduce its impacts.
