Hamburg Leads the Way: Banning Petrol-Powered Taxis to Reduce Carbon Emissions

Hamburg is set to become the first German state to ban petrol-powered taxis from 2025 in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. Currently, 12% of Hamburg’s taxis are electric or hydrogen-powered and the switch will save 25,000 tons of CO2 annually. The project ‚Zukunftstaxi‘ was launched in 2021 with the aim of encouraging a shift towards locally emission-free taxis. 80% of these vehicles are now managed by FREE NOW, with positive feedback from both entrepreneurs and passengers.

Carbon Emissions and the Environment

Carbon emissions are the primary cause of climate change, leading to an increase in global temperatures and a range of other environmental impacts. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most common greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere, with other gases like methane and nitrous oxide also contributing to global warming. Reducing carbon emissions is essential if we are to limit the effects of climate change and preserve our natural environment for future generations. Governments around the world have implemented various policies to reduce carbon emissions, such as increasing energy efficiency standards and investing in renewable energy sources.
